Dinosaur 101: Helicoprion

Good Mornin-ah!!! What is that? It looks like a shark but…wait a minute! That’s today’s Dinosaur 101!

Helicoprion
Size: 10-15 feet in length
Diet: Carnivorous
Name meaning: : “Spiral saw”
Time: Early Permian Era (290 million years ago)
Place: Around the world
Ok, What was this odd tooth-whorl used for? The tooth-whorl has puzzled paleontologists for decades, as it was unknown as to where it fit into the jaw, until a modern reconstruction determined that the most feasible place was within the shark’s mouth. This shark kept the old and new teeth. some of the sharks started to grow teeth into its mouth and or face this look was very strange and weird to most people.

I love that Helicoprion art. I remember when I was little and I went to the field museum and I saw this image there, I was amazed! Sadly they changed the image
