Dinosaur of the Day #139 - Utahraptor

JWA_Profile_Magnapyritor_result

Superficially, Utahraptor (“Utah’s Hunter”)appears to be an earlier, scaled up version of Deinonychus. Specimens of Utahraptor are fragmentary but suggest a potential size of up to seven meters long, with some more conservative estimates falling nearer six meters long. These estimates make Utahraptor a contender for one of the largest known dromaeosaurids, but if that were not enough there are some specimens that hint to Utahraptor possibly being even larger.

Being a larger animal, Utahraptor also had a larger claw estimated to potentially be twenty-four centimetres long. Utahraptor had thick leg bones and are not what you would expect from a fast hunter. They may have instead had extra powerful muscles for driving the killing claw forwards into its prey. Bringing all of the above together, Utahraptor probably focused upon its attentions to larger prey items such as hadrosaurs or smaller sauropods.

As a dromaeosaurid, Utahraptor probably shared the same phylogenetic features of the group, including having feathers. While no feathers have been found with Utahraptor remains, it would be an exception to the ‘group rule’ if it did not have them. One thing to consider however is that the large size of Utahraptor may have meant it had a degree of gigantothermy that would not have been present in its smaller group relatives. If so then it may have had a reduced or altered arrangement of feathers instead.

A better version of Velicoraptor, Utahraptor is slightly slower but gains an extra attack.

I found that after a certain point, low teens player level, it became less useful and was another animal relegated to being a DNA farm for it’s hybrids.

Utah is one of my favorites

Great dino in the lower arenas. Great dna for the upper arenas. Very useful dino.

I like this guy, it did work when I first started playing and I am still happy to dart it now.

Classic. I remember first reading about its powerful kick when I was just a little kid. Thoses were the days.

If I’m not mistaken, it was Utahraptor which was the inspiration for the large size Velociraptors in the film version of Jurassic Park, as they were discovered about the time the film was being planned.

Deinonychus: am I a joke to u

It has been nearly a year since the Dinosaur of the Day discussions started and I thought it might be nice to slowly revisit them and see how things have changed.

So Utahraptor has not changed and remains a good Rare dinosaur for the lower level corners of the Arena. She remains a slightly better version of Velociraptor but her hybrid and the Rare elements of Owen’s raptor pack make her a little less viable I think. Once you get your hands on Utasinoraptor, you have no reason to continue using Utahraptor and she is relegated to the benches again.

What are your thoughts on this dinosaur in the current game?

the gaming beaver once sayd that this is a T-Rex slayer or so, and I 100% aggree: mine saved me in the strike events more than once and it’s a good starter raptor.

She is definitely good for taking out dinosaurs like that, especially if boosted.

Utahraptor has seen a large drop in health and a small drop in damage. Her abilities have not changed much with the exception of she is now a cunning creature rather than a critical one. She remains a slightly better velociraptor but one that is not too bad in the lower levels of the Arena. Owen’s raptors still outgun her though so her viability is questionable. Utahraptor has two hybrids and her DNA is going to go towards at least one of those.

Raptor type dinosaurs don’t seem like good Raid choices and Utahraptor is no different. She is fast and has good damage but such low health that she is not worth it. Utahraptor is a good tournament creature though.

What are your thoughts on Utahraptor after recent updates and how would you use her now?

I want critical impact back on this guy

I do think she was better with that but she is still useable as a cunning creature. Maybe more so?

It deserves a health increase, ngl.
