Dinosaur of the Day #24 - Dilophosaurus

Dilophosaurus

Dilophosaurus is a dinosaur which lived approximately 193 million years ago during the early Jurassic Period. It was first discovered in 1942 in Arizona by Sam Welles. In 1970, he named it Dilophosaurus. Its name means “double crested lizard”.

Thanks to its portrayal in Hollywood movies such as Jurassic Park, Dilophosaurus is one of the most misunderstood of all dinosaurs. That is because the movie depicted this dinosaur doing things that it is not believed to have done in real life. For instance, in the movie it is shown spitting poison at its prey to blind it. There is no proof whatsoever that this dinosaur was poisonous, or that any dinosaur could spray venom in the same way depicted in the film. Another misconception presented as fact in the movie was the expandable neck frill shown on these creatures. There is no proof whatsoever to back up the existence of this anatomical feature.

Another thing portrayed incorrectly in these films is the size of these animals. In the movie, these dinosaurs were seen as cute creatures about the size of a dog. This isn’t the case in real life. In reality, these creatures were about 20 feet long and weighed approximately a thousand pounds. Much bigger than your average dog, for sure.

Dilophosaurus has a fairly average set of stats. It’s health is fairly average as it’s damage. It’s speed is probably it’s best stat. It is a fairly basic dinosaur considering it’s rarity. Overall, the attacks of the Dilophosaurus provide a good amount of damage and help to seriously weaken opposing dinosaurs, either by reducing their damage or removing their positive abilities.

Dilophosaurus is a nice dinosaur and worth including on your team. If you can keep it in line with your other team dinosaurs then it works well, otherwise I think it will fall behind in it’s usefulness.

When I think about how much scarier Dilo would have been in the original JP, had Spielberg not turned it into a goo-spitting, ankle-biting, hopping little chirpy hellbeast, I think of how Newman would have been disemboweled and eaten before he could turn around to go back up to the Jeep.

(I really hate Newman, you can tell.)

It has been nearly a year since the Dinosaur of the Day discussions started and I thought it might be nice to slowly revisit them and see how things have changed.

Dilophosaurus hasn’t changed at all since launch. My opinion of her hasn’t changed in that time. For what she is, she is a basic dinosaur with some reasonable statistics and handy abilities. Good for low to maybe mid game. After that, she is easily replaceable I think because as the game has progressed, newer designs have understandably been better.

Thoughts? Anyone still use her and what are your thoughts?

Useful in tournaments, mostly against Miragaia because it is faster by default, can distract with the impact, and use nullify impact to remove shields. It’s also good against chompers if using distract first and then nullify.

You can never get enough of this dinos DNA

Yeah I have found dilophosaurus is also great against sarcorixous. nullify impact then distract.

Okay. Interesting. So better than she first appears to be?

yeah if you can get her to team lvl, but I am going for her legendary.

It’s funny that rare creature can beat a sarcorixis that can beat thoradolosaur, one of the best chompers in game

Dilophosaurus has lost some health but gained a little damage. Unfortunately though by becoming a cunning creature she has become somewhat worse in my eyes. I used Dilophosaurus because she was a relatively quick nullifying creature and that would help me out in the Arena against a lot of foes. Now she is just cunning I think that she is not so useful anymore.

I guess she could be useful in lower level Raid battles against the right bosses as a support backup for a team but I think you would choose better if you had the option.

What do you think of Dilophosaurus following the 2.0 update and how would you use her now?

Pretty good nonhybrid. Can actually bully the mighty gitaffititan down to low health if it tries to swap-in slow dilophosaurus. Extremely useful for other top tier rares like marsupial lion and even nasutoceratops (it loses, but, like giraffititan, it can bully it into low hp). In the end, I would say that dilophosaurus is one of the, if not THE, best cunning nonhybrids period.

Maybe. I can see that. I just preferred having a speedy nullify creature.
