Dinosaur of the Day #83 - Nodosaurus

Nodosaurus

Nodosaurus (meaning “knobbed lizard”) was a genus of herbivorous ankylosaurian dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous, the fossils of which are found in North America. One incomplete specimen has been discovered in the Frontier Formation of Wyoming. One of the first armored dinosaurs to be discovered in North America. Nodosaurus was named by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1889.

This nodosaurid ankylosaur was about 3.9 to 6 metres (13 to 20 ft) long. It was an ornithischian dinosaur with bony dermal plates covering the top of its body, and it may have had spikes along its side as well. The dermal plates were arranged in bands along its body, with narrow bands over the ribs alternating with wider plates in between. These wider plates were covered in regularly arranged bony nodules, which give the animal its scientific name.

It had four short legs, five-toed feet, a short neck, and a long, stiff, clubless tail. The head was narrow, with a pointed snout, powerful jaws, and small teeth. It perhaps ate soft plants, as it would have been unable to chew tough, fibrous ones; or alternatively it may have processed the latter with gastroliths and its enormous intestinal apparatus.

It is thought that without a club on its tail, Nodosaurus would have been left without much in terms of active defenses. When threatened, it probably dropped to the ground so that only its armored back and sides were exposed, much like modern-day hedgehogs.

Various nodosaur scutes found in the Eastern US have a good chance of being identified as, and probably are, scutes of the genus Nodosaurus. One of them was attributed to Hierosaurus sternbergi, now considered a synonym of Nodosaurus.

Seeing that dino will always make me think of this:

I dart every single one I see, because they all serve to fatten up my Stegodeus! (No, I don’t care that it cannot remove bleeding anymore…)

I get the “Are you talkin’ to me!?” Feel from it. Lol

It does have a rather surprised look to it.

So, what does everyone think of this dinosaur? To me it is another one that will sadly never get used and instead is purely a DNA farm for later hybrids.

Maybe that is why he has that look. He knows what’s up.

Nodosaurus knows that it is the butter robot from Rick and Morty. “what is my purpose”… “to make stegodeus dna”

I have mine at Level 21 (3409/784) at 4100 Tophies and it is a little low. Level 22 is 3579/823 which might be better. It really needs a counter attack to make it battle worthy. Stegosaurus at 22 (3703/988) hits harder, is faster and only lacks a shield attack. There are a lot of choppers around, so it fills a very small niche in this meta. It fits in nice when I put a fleet of tanks in but is at the slower end of it.

The 1.7 update decreased Nodosaurus health down from 4350 to 4200.

It has been nearly a year since the Dinosaur of the Day discussions started and I thought it might be nice to slowly revisit them and see how things have changed.

Nodosaurus has seen a big reduction in her health since launch, otherwise she has remained unchanged. Nodosaurus remains quite weak in my mind. In an age where chompers are frequent, a 25% defence isn’t helpful especially when combined with a health reduction. Unfortunately, she will remain a DNA farm for her hybrid.

Anyone have any thoughts on Nodosaurus in the current game?

The recent update reduced her damage slightly while boosting her abilities more in line with other ankylosaurs. I still think remains weak and still a target for anything that ignores armour. For her rarity she remains okay I guess.

Any thoughts on the new changes?

Resistant to speed decrease (50%) and vulnerable (100%).

Nodosaurus has gained an increase in health and damage. The increase in damage at least brings her up to an average level which does improve her slightly. Her abilities have remained the same for the most part. Nodosaurus is still not great even for her rarity and I think she’ll just be a DNA farm because she doesn’t have what she needs to be Arena worthy really.

Like many Rare creatures, Nodosaurus just does not have the damage or the abilities to be of use in Raid battles.

What are your thoughts on Nodosaurus after recent updates and how would you use her now?
