Here's why Stegod will be just fine

When you think about two tanks going at it in any game on the planet, what you’re thinking about is a grueling long match between two monsters with high armor and high health and relatively average or low damage output. They bash each other over the head about 1000 times, and eventually one wins.

Because the point of a tank in any meta, is to tank things. To take heaps of damage and keep on kicking.

Before patch 1.5, the purpose of stegod was as follows:

  • Beat all tanks with armor piercing.
  • Beat all glass cannons, aka raptors (original intended purpose).
  • Beat or tie all immune dinos with cloak (Indom/Erlidom) also the original intended purpose.
  • Beat all damage over time monsters with Superiority Strike.
  • Beat or trade with pretty much anything that has middling health and distracts/stuns.
  • Beat or mostly beat armor eaters that were specifically given armor to beat Stegod-type tanks because of APR.

Now, there isn’t another dino in the game that works like that with so few counters. Heck, some of the counters that crush armor and shields were literally BAD against Stegod, which is ridiculous. The bleeders couldn’t bleed it. The armor eaters needed a ton of health to survive the repeating APR and they needed enough defense shattering moves to beat the short defense.

And now, after 1.5 drops, Stegod does what it is supposed to do. It beats Raptors and immune dinos that cloak and that nothing else beats with the armor and health and shielding.

So to think Stegod will be useless is to think no one is going to field Erlidom or Indominus Rex (another obvious candidate for increased usage due to the immunity versus the new bleeders), or anything raptor-like for that matter.

Stegod still mostly beats (or at least annoys) the hit’n’runners like Diloraich and Utarinex. It still handles Erlidom’s massive attack. It still handles Indom’s massive attack. It still has a chance to beat Indoraptor through cloak.

And what’s more funny, everyone keeps focusing on how the armor eaters are coming back in full force… but what do you play against armor eaters? You play crap that lowers attack – like Raptors. What do you play against Spinotahsuchus and Suchotator? You play stuff that can hit hard and then swap, or you take a fall and bring in something that can hit really friggin hard – like a raptor.

You seeing the trend here? Tanks aren’t dead. Tanks have been put in a niche. A corner where they are effective against two pretty important players to the meta. The reason raptors died was BECAUSE of the tank meta. So why in the world would anyone think that when tanks go away, raptors won’t come back to SOME DEGREE?

It’s no longer possible to field a team of all one thing. Now you need many. I say well done, Ludia. I’m very much looking forward to this new system where most types beat 1 or 2 other types, giving us a lot of options.

(But in all seriousness… it’s still a great Dino with plenty of uses and finally playing the role of a tank rather than a nuisance. At the very least, it will encourage players to be more creative with what they lead battles with and I won’t get bored anymore. Win Win Win)

*Excellent writing & reasoning btw @MNBrian )

Well said! It’s actually going to make people work on their skill and strategy and think purposefully about the dinos they play.

Waiting for someone to argue with you again Brian, don’t worry I’m ready this time. :crossed_swords:

Stegodeus won’t become useless. Your points are fair. However, in my personal opinion Monostegotops is now more useful. Unfortunately mine’s almost 10 levels lower than my Stegodeus ^^ I’ll keep Stegodeus and start leveling Monostego. Then I’ll see…

I do definitely see some improved use for tank-like creatures like Monostego and Stegocera.

Tragod might just be able to replace stegod now. But first off, what’s the story of her hp reduced to 3990 when she’s only got 3810 now? Is that how they call it nerf??

If leveling weren’t so expensive I’d also start to level Megalosuchus. I never used it in my team because I unlocked it quite late. It seems relavant to me, but I’m not sure if I need two counter-attackers (Rajakylo Lvl 20, hopefully soon Dioraja).
I was thinking of 2 tanks/meta-tanks, 1 counter-attacker, 2 tank busters/heavy hitters, 2 speeders and 1 specialist/joker.

I’d like to have several Immunes and Nullifyers in my team. High attack and pinning should also be useful, I predict a big increase in swaps.

Another well written post Brian. I said the same thing the other day. Stegod is still a great dinosaur and arguably still the best tank. He just now fits the tank role better instead of being an all rounder, which is fine and exactly how it should be. He still counters everything he’s supposed to.

Well written sum up. I’m always amused to see everyone burning or praising a Dino just based on some nerf/buff.

A Dino can be nerfed and be stronger and on the contrary a Dino can receive a buff and be worst. Why? Because a Dino’s usefulness is based on the meta not on its own abilities. You can be the best raptor ever made but if the meta is just full of tanks you’re not going to do anything.

Oh, but there’s one thing I always wanted to do:

making Stegodeus bleed! :smiling_imp:
