If the characters are “away for a while” then don’t worry as they won’t actually unmatch with you as that’s a bug. If they are active conversations then while it’s inconvenient, you’ll be able to match with them again when you come across their profile and resume the story where you left off.
It happened to me too but since the game still isn’t working for me I guess I’ll have to rematch with him
